David Marlett is a Professor in the Department of Finance, Banking an Insurance at Appalachian State University. David recently completed an eight-year term as Chair of the Department. He now holds the IIANC Distinguished Professorship and is focused on teaching, applied research, and service to the university and community. David was recently named the Faculty Director for the Wilson Scholars Program, the premier scholarship program at the university. David serves on the Board of Directors for InVEST, a national organization that promotes insurance education.
David served as editor for the CPCU eJournal for eight years and is now on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Insurance Regulation. He served as Director of the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center for eight years. He is currently a member of the Appalachian State University Athletics Council, the Walker College of Business Working Group, and the CPCU Society Risk Management/Insurance Students Task Force.
Prior to entering the doctoral program at Florida State University, David worked as a commercial lines underwriter for USF&G in Tampa. While in graduate school, he completed his dissertation titled Evaluation of Legislatively Mandated Residual Market and Catastrophe Financing Programs. This continues to be his main area of research. He has published over twenty articles in peer-reviewed journals and regularly presents on the topic. David was appointed by the Speaker of the North Carolina General Assembly as a member of the Joint Select Study Committee on Potential Impact of Major Hurricanes on the Insurance Industry in North Carolina. In 2015, David completed his sabbatical in Christchurch, New Zealand where he studied the recovery from the Canterbury earthquakes and analyzed their national disaster insurance program.
