Dr. Lori Medders to serve as chair of the Department of Finance, Banking & Insurance, effective July 1

Dr. Lori Medders has been named chair for the Department of Finance, Banking & Insurance in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University, effective July 1.

Dr. Medders joined App State’s faculty in 2017 as the Joseph F. Freeman Distinguished Professor of Insurance in the Walker College and has served as the college’s honors program director since 2018. She also founded two departmental programs, Women in Financial Services and AppRISE – Risk Initiative for Student Engagement.

Prior to joining App State’s faculty, Dr. Medders taught at Florida State University from 2009-2017, Georgia State University from 1999-2008, and Georgia Southern University from 1994-1998.

Dr. Medders serves on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Water Distribution and Management and chairs its Education Committee and is chair of the American Risk & Insurance Association's Risk & Insurance Teaching Society, an international organization devoted to excellence in the teaching-learning of risk economics and related disciplines. Additionally, Dr. Medders is a past president of the Southern Risk and Insurance Association that supports research on topics related to risk and insurance, as well as past chair and statistics expert of the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology, a public commission that evaluates methodologies for projecting hurricane and flood losses.

Dr. Medders earned the Walker College’s Sywassink Award for Excellence in Service in 2021 and was a Chancellor’s Innovation Scholar in 2019 and 2022.

Dr. Medders earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business from the University of Alabama and a Ph.D. in Business Administration – Risk and Insurance from Georgia State University.
