Dr. Medders Speaks at National Climate Event

Dr Lori Medders was a featured speaker during a recent national policy conference titled, "Climate Risk and Insurance: Improving Equity, Enhancing Resilience, and Stabilizing Markets." Medders discussed the importance of market stability in the face of climate change, emphasizing the Florida property insurance market for illustration. She urged policymakers to promote (1) reduction of the underlying risks via mitigation, adaptation and risk-averting behaviors; (2) risk-based insurance pricing, thereby enabling insurers to underwrite deeply and broadly, improving both the availability and affordability of protection; and (3) transparent subsidies for our most vulnerable citizens. Sharing the stage with Medders were: Dr Frank Frievalt of California Polytechnic State University; Dr Carolyn Kousky of the Environmental Defense Fund; Kenneth Morgan of SBP; Matt Sanders (AICP) of the Pew Charitable Trusts; Dr Galen Treuer of Miami-Dade Office of Economic Development; and Nancy Watkins (FSA) of Milliman Consulting. The event was jointly hosted by American University's Center for Environmental Policy, the Environmental Defense Fund and the SBP, and was held September 14-15 in Washington, DC at American University's Washington College of Law.
